Managing St. Augustinegrass Runners

st. augustinegrass runners

If you live in Bellville, Texas, then you know St. Augustinegrass! And… You have likely seen those pesky looking runners that look like weeds. Let not your heart be troubled, this is the sign of a growing lawn.

Although this may be a bit unsightly, this is not a huge problem and may in fact be a blessing.

If your lawn has dead patches or bald patches, these runners, called stolons, can help your lawn heal. Stolons can grow into the bald area and begin to build up the lawn in that area.

If your lawn is otherwise healthy, then you may want to just get rid of these unsightly things. Here is what Randy Lemmon, of the Garden Line in Houston had to say about the runners:

The commenter asked Randy Lemmon if anything could be done about the stolons other than yanking them up off the ground. The GardenMan’s cure was helpful.

First: Step on the rooted end of the stolon and yank till it breaks.

Second: To cure the problem, use core aeration!

Third: Treat with a soil amendment such as expanded shale, compost, gypsum, or Azomite.

There is a good chance that you will find these around your Bellville, Texas property. No need to worry. In the case that you are curious for a second opinion or see something else that you’d like ask about, reach out an ask for a Plant Landscape visit! We are happy to help!

We love what we do and we think that passion shows! Here is a quick glimpse at what we can do to transform a backyard from ordinary to beautiful.

We do this kind of landscaping work regualrly in Bellville, Texas and the surrounding area and we are so proud that it adds value to the communities we serve!

For this project we added decking (concrete and wooden), plants, and beds for our clients backyard to transform the space for disjointed and utilitarian to beautiful, comfortable, and inviting.

What is most important in a project like this is attention to detail! Check out the slideshow below to see how it turned out!

We love the way that this Austin County property was transformed into what can clearly be seen as a purposeful and clean design. Without landscaping the space included a pool, propane tank, and pool equipment… Now, all of those components are framed appropriately so that the pool is the center of attention and the maintenance requirements are reduced. Time to enjoy!

Lawn Care Tips – Spring

Homeowners are always working hard to keep their lawn looking healthy and green.  In Bellville, Texas, most properties have St. Augusting grass. here is a quick breakdown on how to make it look best!

Guidelines put out by the Texas Agricultural Extension Service of the Texas A&M University System can be found at:

Maintaining St. Augusting Grass

This is a brief run down of the spring time tips you should follow:

  • Set the mower height to 2.5-3 inches
  • Do not bag the grass clippings (mulch the grass)
    • They provide nutrients as they decompose and feed the lawn
    • This will save you time bagging the clippings!!
  • Begin fertilizing 3 weeks after the lawn turns green
    • Use a 3-1-2 ratio fertilizer
    • The bag will say something like: 15-5-10, 21-7-14, etc…
  • Water to a depth of 6 inches every 5-10 days
    • Check watering depth with a screwdriver
    • Windy and sunny days will require more frequent watering
    • The lawn will tell you when it is thirst again as it begins to turn a dull bluish color (weird right?!?)
  • The best weed control is a healthy lawn
  • Only apply herbicides when weeds are present and the grass is healthy
  • St. Augustine grass is very sensitive to some herbicides
  • Routinely check for chinch bugs and white grubs and treat as needed
